Peranakans are the descendants of Chinese immigrants who came to the Malay archipelago between the 15th ??_ 17th century. Peranakans retained most of their religion (such as ancestor worship), but practiced the Malay culture and language. A typical Peranakan house??_s interior is tiled in exquisitely patterned tiles. The family motto ??_??????_ ??_ ??_hands down a good plan for the next generation??_, is painted onto a plaque fixed above the front door.
The magnificent Cheong Fatt Tze mansion was built in the 1880s. Cheong was a merchant trader who left China as a penniless youth and found his fortune in Malaysia. The Cheong Fatt Tze Mansion combines Eastern and Western designs, with louvred windows and Art Nouveau stained glass.
